REACH - Applications for authorisation AFA061-01 Strontium chromate (StC)
Overview
Public consultation on alternatives
Reference: AFA061-01
Applicant:
Boeing Distribution (UK) Inc.
Henkel Ltd
Application Type: Initial application
Substance Name: Strontium chromate
- EC Number: 232-142-6
- CAS Number: 7789-06-2
Proposed Use: Use of bonding primers containing strontium chromate in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains.
Broad Information on Use Applied for (Conditions of Use and Function):
Strontium chromate is used in bonding primers in the aerospace and defence industries (comprising of the civil aviation, defence/security, and space industries, along with aeroderivative products). Bonding primers provide corrosion resistance and promote and maintain adhesion between a substrate and an adhesive material. This gives key functions including adhesion promotion and corrosion resistance (including ‘active corrosion inhibition’).
The applicants have identified a shortlist of potentially suitable alternatives. Due to the complexity of design challenges, performance requirements, safety requirements and regulatory controls that must be tested for each listed alternative, and the need for industrial implementation in the whole supply chain, the applicants are seeking a review period of 12 years.
This “applied for use” involves the continued use of strontium chromate across approximately 50 sites across Great Britain (GB).
